Two Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officers have been jointly charged in connection to an October 2023 incident.

On Sept. 20, 2024, Const. David Castillo, a 10-year member of the EPS, and Const. Ali Hamzeh, a 3-year member of the EPS, were jointly charged in relation to an on-duty incident that occurred near Whitemud Drive and 66 Street on Oct. 14, 2023.

The EPS Professional Standards Branch received an external complaint regarding the officers on Oct. 17, 2023, and a formal investigation was launched.

The case was referred to Alberta Crown Prosecution Services in Calgary in April 2024.  On August 27, 2024, prosecutors recommended both EPS members be charged.

Const. Castillo is charged with assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm. Const. Hamzeh is charged with assault causing bodily harm.

EPS Professional Standards Branch will commence an investigation under the Police Service Regulation (PSR) following the resolution of the criminal prosecution.

Both Const. Castillo and Const.Hamzeh arecurrently employed in non-patrol and non-supervisory positions.

As the matter is currently before the courts, the EPS is not able to provide further comment or information about the incident or investigation.
