Suspect in fatal SUV shooting turns himself in to police

Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section detectives have charged a man in connection with the fatal shooting of a man travelling in a SUV in north Edmonton last Monday night.

The suspect who was wanted on Canada-wide warrants turned himself in to police at EPS Downtown Division Station at approximately 2:36 p.m. this afternoon (Monday, June 9, 2014).  The suspect was accompanied by his lawyer.

Kalab Abberra Kitil, 22,has been charged with second degree murder, careless use of a firearm, pointing a firearm, knowledge of unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm, unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm in a motor vehicle, and unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition.  The accused is in police custody.

Background:
The EPS Homicide Section was called in to investigate the shooting of a 22-year-old male who was a passenger in an SUV that was allegedly shot at.  The SUV with the victim pulled up to EPS and EMS units who were parked at 113 A Street and 136 Avenue responding to an unrelated incident around 10:30 p.m. on Monday, June 2, 2014.   The male was suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound, and was treated and transported by EMS to hospital in critical condition.  The other three adult male occupants of the SUV did not report any injuries.  Investigations by police led them to the area of 94 Street and 132 Avenue where additional evidence was located on the roadway.  The SUV containing the victim was believed to have travelled along 132 Avenue from 82 Street to 113 A Street.  The victim was identified as Sultanbek Abdymamat Uulu (Abdymamat Uulu is the full surname), 22.  The 22-year-old male succumbed to his injuries and passed away in hospital the morning of Wednesday, June 4, 2014.  The Medical Examiner conducted the autopsy on the morning of Thursday, June 5, 2014, and determined that the man died as a result of a gunshot wound.  The EPS Homicide Section investigated with the assistance of the EPS Northeast and Downtown Divisions, and the EPS Drug and Gang Unit, and determined that the shooting did not appear to be random.  This was Edmonton’s 11th homicide for 2014.
