The Edmonton Police Service is warning the public to take appropriate precautionary measures when purchasing or selling personal items online.
The warning comes on the heels of the latest violent personal robbery – the second this week - which occurred as a result of a fictitious online vehicle advertisement posted on Kijiji.
Southeast Patrol members responded to a weapon’s complaint at approximately 9 p.m., Wednesday, July 10, 2013, near 32 Street and 16A Avenue. Upon arrival, a 23-year-old male and his friend told police three knife-wielding suspects had stolen his 1995 Subaru WRX and $3,200 in cash, which he brought with him for the potential purchase of a vehicle he saw advertised on Kijiji.
The three suspects are believed to have abandoned the victim’s vehicle near 32 Street and 18 Avenue, before fleeing the scene in a late model, green sedan with tinted windows. The three male suspects are described as being East Indian, mid-to-late 20s and were wearing black hoodies at the time of the incident. One of the suspects was wearing an “Angry Birds” T-shirt.
Anyone who has information regarding this personal robbery is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.
On Sunday, July 7, 2013, a 23-year-old male victim was kidnapped at knife-point in a Callingwood-area parking lot and driven to Calgary. The victim had met two prospective buyers, who were allegedly interested in purchasing the victim’s vehicle, which he had advertised for sale on Kijiji.
The victim was able to successfully flee from his captors in Calgary and contact police. Two suspects and the vehicle were located and followed north up the QE2, before being arrested by Red Deer RCMP, who had deployed a spike belt.
