Edmonton Police Service officers and automated enforcement issued more than 2,600 traffic tickets last week during Operation 24 Hours.

The enforcement blitz targets excessive speeding and dangerous driving practices to improve traffic safety.

“Speeding continues to be a problem in our city,” says Acting Staff Sgt. Gener Alvarado with the Major Collision Investigation Unit. “Motorists need to slow down.”

Two vehicles were recorded going more than 50 km/h over the posted speed limit on Anthony Henday Drive. Another vehicle was recorded driving 100 km/h in a 50 km/h zone at 76 Street and 40 Avenue.

In the 24-hour enforcement period starting at 7 a.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2014, 2,365 speeding violations were issued. There were 305 additional tickets handed out for a variety of violations, including seatbelt infractions, impaired driving, distracted driving, traffic safety violations and Criminal Code violations.

There were 2,670 tickets issued for the August 2014 Operation 24 Hours, a decrease from 4,174 tickets issued during the June 2014 enforcement.
