A cyclist has been seriously injured after colliding with a van in the area of 118 Avenue and 81 Street.

Shortly before 11 p.m. on May 27, 2013, a cyclist traveling northbound on 81 Street entered an intersection and was struck by a van travelling westbound on 118 Avenue.

EMS attended the scene and treated the adult male cyclist prior to transporting him to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.

Less than an hour after the cyclist was struck, in an unrelated incident, a pedestrian was involved in what is believed to be a hit-and-run incident in the area of 78 Street and 118 Avenue.

The female pedestrian in that incident was treated on scene and transported to hospital with serious injuries.

The Edmonton Police Service Major Collision Investigative Unit is leading both investigations. Police have shut down westbound lanes of traffic between 77 and 82 Street and 118 Avenue. The area is expected to be shut down for at least three hours.

The results of the separate investigations will determine whether charges are laid in either incident.

Anyone who may have witnessed either incident is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.
