Homicide investigators received a tip Thursday, July 25, 2013, from a member of the public, who recognized Marek’s photo after watching a newscast.
As a result, members converged on a Leduc storage facility, where upon his return to the facility earlier this afternoon, he was then followed in a rental vehicle to a nearby gas station and placed under arrest.
Marek, 38, is scheduled to appear before a Justice of the Peace later today with respect to bail.
Background:
After a complex investigation, which took more than a year to complete, EPS Homicide Detectives have charged Mark Marek, 38, in relation to a video depicting the murder of Jun Lin, that was posted to the bestgore.com website.
Investigations, which began in June 2012, determined that Marek was in fact the owner and operator of the website, which was also being operated out of Edmonton. Homicide Section conducted an investigation into the website and video, which were linked to the homicide investigation of Jun Lin, in Montreal. Montreal police charged Luka Magnotta with murder in the death of Jun Lin.
Detectives arrested and charged Marek, of Edmonton, last night (July 16, 2013) with corrupting morals (Sect. 163(1)(a) of the Criminal Code).
Marek was eventually granted bail with a condition that he must remain at a specific address. Marek disappeared shortly thereafter.
