Homicide detectives arrested a 21-year-old male and charged him with second degree murder on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 in relation to the homicide of Andrew Frang, 25, that occurred on
Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, in the area of 118 Avenue and 124 Street.
“This was simply a random act of violence and was completely unnecessary,” says Staff Sgt. Dave Christoffel. “In most homicides, victims know their assailants, as in 13 of 17 solved homicide files in 2013.”
On Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, just after midnight, it was reported that Andrew Frang left a pub with his girlfriend with the intention of walking a short distance to a restaurant in the area of 118 Avenue and 124 Street.
The couple walked past two youth that allegedly were drinking in public and asked them for a cigarette. The request was ignored and the youth followed Frang. A verbal confrontation ensued that quickly turned violent and Frang was fatally stabbed.
A full investigation took place and exhibits were submitted for DNA analysis, however, there were no matches. There was insufficient evidence in 2008, which ultimately hindered investigators in their efforts to conclude the file.
On Jan. 11, 2011, investigators received a break in the case after a second suspect gave a DNA sample for an unrelated file, which matched the unidentified DNA that was submitted in 2008.
After a lengthy investigation, a 21-year- old male suspect was arrested on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 for the death of Andrew Frang.
The name of the 21-year-old male cannot be disclosed under the Criminal Youth Justice Act as he was 16-years-old at the time of the murder.
